The Algarve’s Judicial Police (PJ) have carried out the arrest of a 39-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated murder and possession of a prohibited firearm, following a fatal shooting near a building site in central Silves which occurred on 25 May.
According to the PJ, the suspect and the victim had been working together in the construction sector since the beginning of the year. Investigators said frequent disputes had arisen between the two men, allegedly fuelled by excessive alcohol consumption and an outstanding debt reportedly owed by the deceased.
On the day of the incident, the suspect allegedly took a firearm belonging to a relative and went to the construction site where the victim was working. Following what police described as a brief exchange of words, he is alleged to have fired a single shot into the left side of the victim’s head, causing his immediate death.
After gathering evidence over recent days linking the suspect to the killing, officers from the PJ’s Criminal Investigation Department in Portimão arrested the man and seized the firearm and ammunition believed to have been used in the attack.
The suspect is due to appear before a judge for an initial hearing, during which the coercive measures to be imposed pending further proceedings will be determined.
