Several vehicles have been targeted in a series of daylight break-ins in recent weeks in the Açoteias neighbourhood of Albufeira, with local business owners expressing growing concerns over security in the popular tourist destination.
The latest incident occurred on Saturday, 6 June, when, according to a local businessman, “some American customers were having lunch while their car was parked outside the restaurant”.
A nearby resident noticed that the rental vehicle’s window had been smashed and alerted the tourists. “Bags, laptops and passports that had been left on the seats were stolen,” the businessman said.
Other vehicles were also reportedly broken into over the weekend in the car park serving Praia dos Tomates, a beach located in the Açoteias area.
The recent incidents have heightened concerns among local businesses, who fear the impact on both residents and visitors. “We know the GNR is doing what it can with the resources available, but it is important to increase police patrols in this area,” the businessman added.
The National Republican Guard (GNR) attended the scenes and has launched investigations in an effort to identify and locate those responsible.
