Bernie Ecclestone, 95, detained in Cascais over illegal shotgun on private jetFormer Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone was detained at Tires Aerodrome in Cascais this morning, 7 September, after arriving in Portugal in his private jet. He is being investigated by Portugal’s Tax and Customs Authority over the alleged transportation of a shotgun.

The 95-year-old former Formula 1 chief was stopped by inspectors from the Tax and Customs Authority after allegedly travelling with a firearm on board his private jet.

Members of the PSP’s Airport Division, which is responsible for security at Tires Aerodrome, are also understood to have been involved in the operation.

Ecclestone, who stepped down from his long-running role at the helm of Formula 1 in 2017, divides his time between Switzerland and Portugal. He resides at a home in Cascais, reportedly valued at around €40 million.

The circumstances surrounding the firearm, including whether it was legally licensed and how it came to be on board the aircraft, have not yet been made public.

The investigation is being conducted by the Tax and Customs Authority, which is responsible for customs controls at Portuguese airports and investigating potential offences involving the importation and transportation of goods.

Ecclestone's arrival at Tires comes as the former F1 boss continues to maintain close links with Portugal, where he has established a base in the affluent Cascais area.
