More than 700 dogs of both national and international breeds will take part in the Algarve Canine Shows, being held today and tomorrow, 11 and 12 September, at Lagos Municipal Stadium.
The free-entry event will turn Lagos into “a meeting point for dog enthusiasts”, with the National and International Algarve Canine Shows taking place at Lagos Municipal Stadium.
“Over two days, the public will have the opportunity to see more than 700 dogs representing a wide range of national and international breeds, coming from several countries and judged by a panel of six international judges from Belgium, Spain, and Portugal,” reads a statement from the Portuguese Kennel Club.
Judging of the various breeds begins at 5.30pm on both days, followed from 10.30pm by the Grand Prizes, described as “the highlight of the programme, bringing together the winning dogs”.
The programme will also feature two events on Saturday dedicated to Portuguese breeds with strong ties to the Algarve: the 5th Monographic Dog Show for the Cão do Barrocal Algarvio at 9pm, followed by the 38th Monographic Dog Show for the Portuguese Water Dog at 9.30pm.
“Hosting these shows in Lagos provides an opportunity to promote and celebrate the world of dog breeding, giving the public an insight into the diversity of breeds taking part and, in particular, the genetic and cultural heritage associated with Portuguese dog breeds,” the organisers said.
The Algarve Canine Shows are organised by Lagos Municipal Council and held in accordance with the regulations of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and the Portuguese Kennel Club (CPC), with support from Lagos Zoo and sponsorship from Ownat.
Visitors may bring their own dogs to the event, provided they are kept on a lead at all times. Owners must carry their dog’s vaccination record at all times.
The venue will also have a catering area offering a range of food and refreshments throughout the event.
