Albufeira: Nine men arrested on Falésia beach while attempting to refuel drug-smuggler boatNine men have been arrested near Praia da Falésia in Albufeira after being caught today, 14 September, in an operation involving Portugal’s Polícia Marítima and GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana).

The arrests followed intelligence received by the authorities, which prompted officers from the Polícia Marítima’s Central Criminal Investigation Unit (UCIC), working alongside the GNR, to launch an operation in the area.

The group was intercepted close to the beach, where officers found around 100 jerry cans filled with fuel.

According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the fuel containers were seized along with a vehicle, five registration certificates, three sets of keys belonging to different vehicles, a drone,  and five mobile phones.

The nine men are suspected of providing support for drug trafficking, and were detained after allegedly being caught red-handed.

They are due to appear before a judge, who will determine the coercive measures to be imposed while the investigation continues.
