A 22-year-old Belgian woman was rescued this Thursday, September 24, by crew members from the Ferragudo Lifeboat Station after being swept away by a strong current and rammed against jagged rocks at Salamitras Beach, in the municipality of Albufeira. The victim suffered a leg fracture.
The alert was received at 11:32 AM via the Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters Association, prompting the mobilization of the Ferragudo Lifeboat Station crew and personnel from the Portimão Local Maritime Police Command.
According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the young woman had been "thrown by the current against a rocky area," resulting in injuries at a location that is understood to have been difficult to access by land.
Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew confirmed that the victim was in an "area of difficult access," necessitating a rescue by sea.
The young woman was retrieved from the site and transported by the Ferragudo Lifeboat Station vessel to the Albufeira Marina, where Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters personnel were waiting.
After receiving initial care, she was taken to hospital by the firefighters, where she is now receiving treatment for her injuries.
