Gandhi honoured by British Parliament

4801Parliament Square in London will have a statue of Mahatma Gandhi added to its collection.

A statue of the Indian political leader will stand alongside those of Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela opposite the Houses of Parliament.

Gandhi was a student in London for many years before he went on to lead non-violent resistance against British rule in India.

Just months after that independence became reality, Gandhi was assassinated in January 1948.

His statue will be the 11th in Parliament Square. Other public figures there include former Prime Ministers Winston Churchill, Benjamin Disraeli and Robert Peel.

Charitable donations and sponsorships will underwrite the cost. The completion date is planned for early 2015.

It was only in 1968 that a statue of Gandhi was erected in the centre of Tavistock Square where there is also a bust of Virginia Woolf and a memorial to conscientious objectors.

The announcement of the new statue was made on the second day of a visit to New Delhi by Foreign Minister William Hague and Chancellor George Osborne.
