Brazil’s Dilma wins

brazilpresidentBrazil’s incumbent president, Dilma Rousseff, has retained the presidency for a second term in a close vote of 51.6%.

Ms Rousseff, 66, won the closely-fought election with Aécio Neves, the leader of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party.

This is the fourth time in a row that the country’s left-leaning Workers’ Party has been in power.

Ms Rousseff paid tribute to her predecessor Lula daSilva, whose social reforms she continued and were the platform for her re-election.

The Bolsa Familia allowance, for example, has helped millions get out of poverty.

But the country lags behind in public services, such as health, education and basic sanitation.

The campaign was stung by mass protests, corruption scandals and a faltering economy. The opposition candidate had won the backing of the markets and businesses concerned over the economic slowdown.

Brazil, the world’s seventh largest economy, fell into recession earlier this year for the first time in five years.
