Stop eating wild birds

chaffinchThe Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) has launched a campaign to stop the sale of wild birds destined for cages or the pot.

"Say NO to birds in the cage and on the plate," aims to draw attention to the illegal capture and sale of migratory birds, a practice that threatens bird populations.

"Diga NÃO aos passarinhos na gaiola e no prato" is the result of a partnership with environmental groups Aldeia, Cervas, Rias, A Rocha and Quercus.

A recent study released by SPEA found that warblers, robins, goldfinches and chaffinches are some of the most affected birds in the Faro, Porto and Lisbon regions where there has been the most cases of illegal capture and killing.

"The capture of birds to be sold as snacks in cafes and restaurants, and the sale of birds online on sites like OLX, threatens populations of migratory birds in Portugal and abroad. These are two strong reasons for us conducting this campaign," said SPEA in a statement released today.

Although the capture of wild birds to cage or eat is illegal, it is carried out across the country under the heading of 'traditional.' "Too little has been done regarding public awareness," added SPEA which now has new laws to back up its activities and inspections by the authorities at regional fairs have staretd to produce results.

Quoting Beryl:
This bird hunting - when there is a perfectly adequate Intermarche down the road - yet again illustrates the gulf between advanced EU and backward EU.

Yesterdays example were two young men in their 20's - in for 10 years or so for upsetting someone important - burrowing out of their Leiria prison.

AND ... I hear you ask - what else ? Nothing else !

More culture shock - obviously in a developed country we would be given their names, physical description and photo ID. The area they operated in before being banged up ... all that sort of thing.

So we can keep our eyes peeled for them. This lack of info. just condemns all young 20 something male hitchhikers to a long wait beside the road side.

It is exactly the gulf in police effectiveness well demonstrated so often - such as in the missing Madeline McCann investigation.

I honestly do not understand what this load of tripe is about. :-*

A ban on the sale of spring traps used to catch songbirds might be a good start. These are made in their thousands (mainly by gypsies) and sold through State Agricultural Suppliers as well as at local markets; my local branch of Fruiti-Coop at Chinicato sells them in bundles of 100 very cheaply. :sigh:

WARNING : chiptheduck may not be 'one of us'. But one of them ...

Ask yourself - Why does chiptheduck have such a problem with (British) BBC House Rules ?

If an 'animal lover' it is so desperately sad to be in the EU and constantly witnessing animal (including in this case bird) abuse and unnecessary killing.

Read about the BBC wildlife expert Chris Packhams Malta trip (link below).

How desperately sad and backward this nonsense about bird hunting is. In Malta for some weird reason allowing the Maltese special permission to shoot thousands of apex hunters - the raptors - 'out of season' .

Hawks. Eagles. Harriers and such like !

In the developed northern Europe thousands of enthusiasts are employed or spending their time ringing these birds - to study their migration patterns. And just appreciating their beauty.

Waiting for ringed birds that will never return because some cretino has shot the bird out of the sky ... for a laugh!

A beauty totally missing to so many south
Europeans.

It is so important that TV programmes from the North such as the BBC SpringWatch / SummerWatch and AutumnWatch - and any other German / Dutch etc - are shown regularly in the South.

Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) ... this sounds suspiciously like the Japanese being allowed to 'study' Pilot Whales ... by killing them.

Why study them ? What is wrong with forming a group to campain for all animals ? A Society for the PROTECTION OF BIRDS AND ALL ANIMALS ?

This just emphasises how backwards Barosso has kept Portugal. He could have yanked them into the 19th Century but has left the Portuguese and Portugal still somewhere in the 17th to 18th century.

Still fretting over territory and colonies - not getting on with being a good European partner.

Still totally abysmal at integrating other EU states into the Portuguese economy and with a particular secret hatred (fear / jealousy) of the Brits (but, NOT THEIR MONEY)!

This is not quite as straightforward as it seems.
