Majority of Brits want European Arrest Warrant

prisoninteriorMore than half the people in the UK think the country should be part of the European Arrest Warrant.

The warrant requires EU countries to arrest and transfer a suspected criminal to the country which requested the warrant so that that person can be tried.

A poll byYouGov found that 56% of people thought that the UK should participate, while 18% were against.

Some 100 Tory MPs, however, are of different opinion over the warrant and are expected to vote against it. Many believe it will result in Britons being extradited on spurious grounds.

Prime Minister Cameron tried to assure everyone that the UK is able to reject such spurious demands, having already reformed the arrest warrant.

Scores of arrest warrant requests have already been rejected since the reforms were announced in July.

MPs will vote soon on the issue.

The Prime Minister may be right, but common sense tells us that he is wrong. There have been umpteen stories of individuals being extradited on flimsy grounds. Because the extradition is under the EAW, the British Court has been powerless to oppose it.

If the British government has been able to reject applications made on spurious demands, it indicates that Britain is already participating in the EAW scheme. So what are the MPs voting about?
