New initiative for the Algarve's railway line

Algarve's old train servicePortugal’s parliament has passed a resolution that ‘recommends’ that the Government proceeds with the refurbishment and electrification of the Algarve railway line.

The resolution was published today in the Official Gazette, but the detail contains not a word on the electrification of the line or the long overdue renovation of tracks and stations.

So what does the Algarve get in place of a safe, modern railway system? A new timetable.

The resolution recommended only that "the government carries out more joint scheduling of regional trains with long distance trains," with no mention of any of the recommendation for electrification or remodeling.

This infrastructure project is so long overdue that many Algarve politicians seem resigned to an antiquated rolling stock and a creaky infrastructure, thus ignoring the upside that a newly launched ral service with modern facilities would bring to the region.
