Driverless cars are to be introduced on the streets of Milton Keynes by 2015.
Twenty trial pods will run on lanes which have been separated from pedestrian traffic.
The £1.5 million project aims to have 100 pods operating in Milton Keynes by 2017, where they will be used to ferry passengers between the train station and shopping centres a mile away.
Each journey will cost £2 in the two-seater vehicle which will travel at 12mph, and is expected to generate £1m of revenue in the first year.
The pods will have steering wheels to control them, but passengers will be able to work, see emails, or read during the trip.
Driverless pods already operate at Heathrow’s Terminal 5, but these ones will use use GPS, high definition cameras and sensors to navigate and avoid hitting things.
Driverless cars in California have already clocked up 400,000 miles without a single accident.
