Skeletal remains of Australian suitcase child “unlikely to be those of Madeleine McCann”, say police

Madeleine McCannThe skeletal remains of a child found dumped in a suitcase in Southern Australia are “highly unlikely” to be those of Madeleine McCann, say investigators.

Following mounting speculation in the foreign press, South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has told reporters: “There is absolutely no evidence at this point in time to suggest that the child concerned is Madeleine McCann.

"We're prepared to consider any possibility but to suggest something like that at this point in time would purely be speculation for the benefit of getting attention."

The story broke at the weekend (click here Skeletal remains of murdered child “closely resembling Madeleine McCann” found in Australia ) after the macabre remains of a child “certainly murdered” as many as eight years ago were found at the side of a highway in the South Australian bush, 138 km from the city of Adelaide.

Police in charge of the inquiry say they believe the child was a “fair-haired girl aged between two-and-a-half and four” and that her body had been “transported from place to place in the suitcase for some time”, but for now they are concentrating on much more local cases - even though reports in the Australian press claim “there is no-one on the South Australian database who is thought to match the discovery”.
