Man savaged by dog on Quarteira beach

dogdangerousTwo dogs caused havoc on a Quarteira beach, one biting a 57-year-old man, and both eventually were captured and sent to Loulé municipal kennels to await their fate.

The dogs, a mother and son, caused panic amongst holidaymakers on the beach at the end of Wednesday afternoon.

The president of the local parish council, Telmo Pinto said, "is an isolated case", adding, "I have asked the GNR that inquiries should be made to identify the owner of the animals so that he or she can be held responsible. There is no further risk to beach users."

Pinto said that "although four people were confronted by one of the dogs, only one person suffered injuries and had to receive hospital care."

The victim was a man of 57 who was attacked while attempting to rescue a child who was playing with a toy near his parents. The dog bit the man who had slipped and fallen. He suffered deep bite wounds to his right leg and cuts on his left.

A Spanish doctor who was on the beach gave the man first aid before the victim was taken by ambulance to the Health Centre in Loulé.

The two captured dogs are said to have traces of pitbull terrier and neither was chipped. Both dogs were captured by GNR officers with the help of the public after a chase of more than one kilometre.

Whoever owns the animals is in trouble as a dog attack is considered a criminal act and the owner is liable.

The victim already has lodged a complaint and the case will go to the prosecutor for investigation into the ownership of the animals.

Usual dog fascists response, its always the humans......just remember dog fascists that far more do not have dogs than have them. Keep your smelly, dirty flee bitten animals on leads and stop them from fouling everywhere

Such nonsense! I have seen pictures of the dogs and there is no pitbull in them. So it seems like the newspapers tried to make a story more sensational by hyping it up. Also I know from an eye witness that the young and playful dog only picked up a stick or a shovel which belonged to a child. The father then kicked the dog to get the toy back and at the third kick the dog than bit the man superficially in the leg. So no "rescue of a child" just intolerance of a dog taking a toy. I don't think dogs should be roaming on the beach out of hygienic reasons and also as there are people intolerant or scared of dogs. But I don't understand why a newspaper has to distort a reality like it happened here! Get your facts right and report according to the truth!

So sad that if these two dogs were sick, thirsty, disorientated and obviously distressed - very few locals would have shown any concern at all. As is usual - some foreigners would have been concerned. But to then do what ?

And the GNR or Municipal then looking for the 'owner' .... hah!!! Now laugh out loud. Fall over laughing. Pick yourself up then throw yourself back onto the floor laughing. To avoid disturbing neighbours hold a cushion over your mouth. Remembering to breath occasionally.

When calm again - wake up .... this is Portugal.
