The majority of those Portuguese on Interpol’s hit list are wanted by the Brazilian judicial authorities to comply with prison sentences for drug trafficking and international people trafficking for sexual exploitation.
The former deputy PSD leader Duarte Lima is on the list and will be arrested should he leave Portuguese territory.
Conveniently, there is no extradition between Portugal and Brazil despite their close links, a situation the allows criminals to hide out in the other country.
According to the list published on the Interpol website, six Portuguese are wanted by the Brazilian authorities for international drug trafficking and the police are after four Portuguese who they would like to serve their sentences for international people trafficking for sexual exploitation.
One dual nationality Portuguese-French man is wanted for trafficking in women and fraud to obtain economic benefits.
Duarte Lima is the best know Portuguese figure on the Interpol hit list.
The former Social Democrat MP, lawyer and vice president of the National Policy Committee of the PSD between 1989 and 1991, is accused by the Brazilian judicial authorities of the 2009 murder of Rosalia Ribeiro on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.
Ribeiro was killed with two shots after allegedly refusing to sign a document millions to Lima from millionaire Lúcio Thomé Feteira.
Lima denied all knowedge of Ribeiro's violent and untimely death but €5.2 million later was transferred from Brazil to Lima’s Swiss bank account following her murder, and suspicions include the forgery of Ribeiro's signature
In Portugal during the 2014 Operation Homeland bank fraud trial, Lima was told by the judge that Lima had displayed "cunning conduct which misled those in charge and caused damage to Banco Português de Negócios and in this manner made gains to which he was not entitled."
Lima was sentenced to ten years and immediately appealed.
Brazilian judicial authorities also have asked Interpol to find another Portuguese man for fraud, two for murder and one for a property scam.
The Interpol list also includes Telma Sofia Couto Garcia, a 28-year Portuguese doctor, who is sought by the Swiss authorities to serve a sentence for the murder, robbery and kidnap of her husband.
Macao and China are looking for a man and a woman of dual Portuguese/Chinese nationality accused of bribery, money laundering and unjustified wealth.
Duarte Lima is free in Portugal pending his appeal hearing for his ten year sentence as the judge did not consider him a flight risk.
