Socialist leader promises an end to Algarve tolls, sort of

5280Socialsist leader António Costa has come the closest yet to stating that the toll systems on former free SCUT roads in the Alentejo and Algarve will end.

Speaking to reporters on his election roadshow today, the socialist leader referred to the need to "make a reassessment of the financial obligations that the state took on" and that "in order to allow either in the interior regions or in all border regions and even in particular areas where tourists come in, such as the Algarve’s Via do Infante, to delete and create conditions to create better accessibility conditions."

This skillfull gibberish should not be seen as a definitive socialist manifesto promise but rather an acceptance that ‘something should be done.’

Faro socialist candidates in the Algarve commissioned a report from the university where economics experts concluded that cutting tolls by 50% would be of huge economic benefit to the region and reduce the increasing death rate on the EN125 ‘alternative’ road.

Prime Minster Passos Coelho has stated that he will reduce toll fees on the Algarve’s Via do Infante motorway if he wins the forthcoming election. His reason for not lowering the fees beforehand is that it might look like a pre-election gimmick.
