A Briton brandishing a kitchen knife made threats against GNR officers in Albufeira after he had attempted to stab a man in the street.
The menace was arrested by the GNR after a patrol tracked him down and officers threatened with the knife.
The local police had been approached by a Portuguese man who said that a foreigner had tried stabbing him as he walked along Avenida Sá Carneiro, one of the main streets of the city.
Based only on a description from the alleged victim, and without corroboration from any witnesses, the GNR officers went to the place where the incident had taken place and found a man who matched the description.
The GNR approached the suspect as he was leaving the area who reacted in an aggressive manner, waving the knife around and making threats.
The officers quickly immobilise the foreigner and seized his weapon without injury.
The suspect was in Albufeira court yesterday morning and was released pending trial.
