Hotels and other registered tourism properties in the Algarve registered a rise in income this April compared with the same month last year.
"The turnover increased by 6.9% over the same month of 2015," reports the Association of Hotels and Resorts in the Algarve (AHETA) in its monthly activity report.
This increase in turnover was due to a rise in occupancy from 55.5% in April 2015 to 61.7% in April 2016, a healthy increase and one that bodes well for this summer season bringing record numbers to the Algarve.
These are the best figures since 2006.
French tourists increased in number by 2.5% despite parts of the the region appearing to have become French enclaves, the Dutch were up slightly by 1.9% and the ever-reliable British up 1.3%.
The areas that did best were Albufeira, up 12.9% and successfully over the damage wreaked by the huge storm last November which caused an estimated €20 million of damage, followed Carvoeiro/Armação de Pêra, up 10.8%.
According to AHETA, the main increases were seen in four and five start developments and apartments (+12.7%) and in four-star hotels and apartment hotels, up 10.8%.
