The municipal kennel in Lagos again is offering free sterilisation for dogs and cats in order to "control the growth of the animal population."
The campaign, for both male and female animals, started today and runs until May 13th.
According to the municipal vet, the successful campaign last year saw 144 animals treated, with 58 dogs and 86 cats undergoing surgery at no charge to the owners or those bringing in street animals.
This year's campaign again relies on the voluntary cooperation of many vets practicing in the Lagos area.
Currently, the municipal kennel only has capacity for 42 dogs and seven cats and this latest preventative campaign will reduce future populations, many of which would have ended up at the municipal kennel of which a high percentage would be destroyed according to the time limits set by law.
