The Judicial Police announced the arrest of one of Olhão’s most wanted, for "crimes of a violent nature, including attempted murder, physical violence, using a firearm and theft."
The detainee is a 20-year-old man suspected of several robberies and part of a group that a year ago shot at a man outside the city’s railway station.
The police said that the suspect was arrested during an operation to locate a 13-year-old girl who had been missing from home and whom the man was said to be dating.
The railway station shooting in September last year shocked residents who recognise the city has its share of problems but saw attempted murder in broad daylight as a sharp escalation.
The victim, part of another gang, was shot in the head during an exchange of fire, but survived with only superficial injuries.
One of Olhão's narrow backstreets was shut off by police on Wednesday afternoon as a body lay in the road, quite dead.
An 80-year-old man inexplicably had fallen from his terrace, six metres from the ground, at around 15:00.
The police covered the body with a plastic sheet and later, as the medical services took over an hour to arrive, with a crime scene tent.

Over in Budens, Vila do Bispo, an 87-year-old woman was severely burned when her clothes caught fire while she was cooking. She was rushed to the hospital in Portimão where she is in critical condition with 40% burns.
