Portugal’s abortion rate falls again

upsetwoman2013 saw 17,414 abortions performed on Portugal’s women, a 6.2% decrease in a year. This also is the lowest number since the decriminalisation of abortion in Portugal in 2007.

Two-thirds of these voluntary terminations were performed with drugs and were performed within the legal 10 week period, according to the latest report by the Directorate General of Health which has been monitoring the trends.

Humpback whale died of its injuries

whalehumpbackThe body of a nine metre humpback whale was found at dawn today on the beach at Cabanas near Tavira. The whale was a young one as adults range in length from 12–16 metres.

The 2.5 tonnes mammal had badly cut fins and the assumption is that the whale had been entangled in fishing nets and was cut free with a knife.

French invaders are welcomed by the taxman

santander2The fight against money laundering and terrorist financing has led the Spanish government to create a huge database with over 34 million accounts, reports ‘El País.’

The file containing the financial activity of all who have accounts in Spain can be consulted by judges, tax inspectors, police and Spain’s secret services.

Economy Minister leads his troops into Shanghai

ship3Economy Minister Pires de Lima is basking in the bright lights of Shanghai and already has reported, perhaps indiscreetly,  that the Chinese are interested in buying into Portugal’s privatisation of publically owned transport businesses.

Pires de Lima arrived in Shanghai on a trip with “enormous potential" and in his wake are over 100 Portuguese business leaders keen to meet Chinese companies and do deals.

Germany found still to be divided

germanyTwenty-five years after the country was reunified, researchers believe that: "The gulf between east and west is currently even wider than it was immediately after German reunification".

The research indicated that social cohesion had increased across the whole country, but was stronger in the regions of the former West Germany.

Dozens of migrants perish at sea

seasIn the latest migrant tragedy, dozens are feared drowned in the Mediterranean today.

One boat, carrying 400 people, was about 100 nautical miles south of the Italian island of Lampedusa when it capsized. Vessels from both the Italian navy and coast guards rushed to the area along with helicopters.

Portugal - Barclays plans to stay on

barclayshqOn May 8th Barclays announced its withdrawal from Europe as new Chief Executive Anthony Jenkins made a decision to trim the operations and scale of the business.

Today’s announcement from the local banking union that Barclays has no intention entirely of leaving Portugal and that the bank is to keep three business areas in the domestic market, has further unsettled both staff and customers.
