Tax: expats await Government consultation

4801In last week’s budget, the British Chancellor announced Budget that personal allowances for non-residents are set to be reviewed.

This applies to expats and there are concerns that pensioners could be hit

Every UK taxpayer’s personal allowance allows for a certain amount of income that can be earned before tax must be paid. For the 2014/15 tax year the level is £10,000 for a single person, with different rates according to marital status and age.

Portugal’s waste disposal is mostly landfill

rubbishThe EU reported that in 2012 each person in the 28 member nations produced 492kg during the year of municipal waste which is that generated by households and small businesses.

Of that, nearly all (480kg) was treated – 34% was sent to landfill, 24% was incinerated, 27% was recycled and 15% was turned into compost.

Sonae buys out key Algarve shopping centres

sonaeSonae Sierra has bought out its partner in the Albufeira Shopping Centre and Portimão’s Continente Shopping Centre.

The Portuguese company acquired the remaining 50% previously held by the GREP II fund controlled by property giant Grosvenor Fund Management.

Arrested Golden Visa Chinese national shielded from extradition

prisonchineseThe President of the Court of Appeal in Lisbon, Luís Vaz das Neves, has remanded the Chinese holder of a cherished Portuguese Golden Visa to 18 days in detention to enable the Chinese authorities time to submit the correct paperwork for his extradition.

Xiaodong Wang was arrested last Thursday after his name had appeared on an Interpol ‘wanted’ list. The fugitive quite naturally does not want to go back to China to start  a jail sentence for tax evasion.

Most asylum seekers don’t look to Portugal

refugueesCountries in the European Union experienced a steep rise in the number of asylum seekers in 2013.

The number rose to nearly 435,000. In all, this is 100,000 more than in 2012.

Eurozone recovery “gaining traction”

europeThe eurozone continues to show continued growth, pointing to the recovery taking hold.

A survey of thousands of companies across the eurozone indicated that growth remained stable in March. It was conducted by the respected agency Markit whose reports are watched closely by economists.
