President passes 2014 budget for yet more austerity

belemPortugal’s President Cavaco Silva has passed the 2014 State Budget which will increase taxes and income cuts for those in Portugal who have an income.


The President did not forward the budget to the Constitutional Court to be assessed he did decide to sent it on for checks as to the constitutionality of its contents, to avoid challenges from affected parties.

Portuguese private hospitals look abroad for patients

stethascopeThe number of patients treated from Portuguese-speaking countries in Portugal’s private hospitals has reached tens of thousands, bringing in millions of euros, according to data provided by the major private hospitals.

Information supplied by Espírito Santo Saúde (ESS), José de Mello Saúde (JMS) and from Hospitais Privados de Portugal (HPP) indicate that the number of patients from Lusophone countries, especially Brazil and Angola, has easily reached 10,000 this year, representing a turnover that in the case of ESS, exceeded €8 million.

More Portuguese use the internet, especially for taxes

financasInternet access and use across the European Union is now widespread, averaging 79% of households in 2013.

In the six years since 2007, that percentage has soared from 55%.

In Portugal, 62% of households have internet and broadband access.

Ten million finally board Eurostar

tgvEurostar trains have finally reached the goal of transporting 10 million passengers.

The breakthrough result came in 2013.

Eurostar’s first services began in November 1994. At that time, it predicted it would carry 10 million by 1998.

Jimi Hendrix museum planned in Mayfair

hendrixThe legendary guitarist, Jimi Hendrix, is to be remembered for his time in London by turning his flat into a permanent museum.

Hendrix lived in the top floor flat of 23 Brook Street in Mayfair for a year until 1969. His rent then was £30 per week.

In September 1970, he died of an apparent overdose at what was then the Samarkand Hotel in Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill.

Night-time pedestrian killed at Poço Frito

pocofritoA pedestrian was hit by a vehicle and died as he walked along the side of the EN 269 at Poço Frito, Silves last night.

Emergency services were called to the accident not far from Alcantarilha Gare, at the northern boundary of the Oceanico Amendoeira Golf Resort, but the 61 year old was dead.
 
GNR traffic officers are investigating the circumstances of the accident which happened at 23.00 in an unlit area. The victim was walking along the side of the road when he was hit and died instantly of severe impact injuries. The shocked driver stopped and called the police.  

New Year's Eve in the Algarve

In Faro, New Year’s Eve will kick off with the local Stone Covers Band and the DJ André Salgueiro in the Jardim Manuel Bivar, and in Quarteira revellers can hear the group La Plante Mutant.
