Portimão's Municipal Assembly to vote on 'tourist tax'

portimaoThe Portimão Municipal Assembly is to convene on Friday, November 15, in an extraordinary session to discuss one thing – the Algarve’s tourist tax.

Those in the chamber will discuss and clarify the implementation and implications of the introduction of a tourist tax in the municipality and may decide to vote against the idea.

Portugal’s population continues its slow decline

baby2012The resident population in Portugal fell in 2017, despite a slight reduction in the death rate, a decrease in emigration and an increase in immigration, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics.

According to the latest demographic statistics, the population has been declining since 2010, although the rate of decline has eased over the last four years.

May defends Brexit agreement in turbulent parliament

This puts significant doubts in the Brexit process and has pushed sterling back towards recent lows.

Baixo Guadiana developing as a birdwatching area

flamingosDonanaThe Odiana association is dedicating a day to the ornithology of the Baixo Guadiana area, starting with a workshop and photography exhibition in the Municipal Library of Vila Real de Santo António.

This will be followed by a field trip to the salt flats of Cerro do Bufo, in Castro Marim, where a rich variety of brid species can be found. The event is on Saturday, 17th November.

Madeleine McCann: Operation Grange to receive further funding

madeleine2The Metropolitan Police operation, that so far has cost UK taxpayers £11.75 million, is to receive £150,000 in further funding to keep Operation Grange active.

The Home Office confirmed on Tuesday that it has allocated the money to Scotland Yard to continue its investigation until March, 2019.

Former Faro Health Sciences building to provide student accommodation

studentsgraduationThe University of Algarve has signed up to the National Fund for Building Rehabilitation and now will study the feasibility of converting the former School of Health Sciences, near the prison, into student accommodation and housing for lower-income families.

This National Fund is managed by Fundestamo which provides student accommodation and homes for families who, while not in urgent need, have difficulty finding suitable housing at prices they can afford.

Bomb scare closes Albufeira Shopping centre

gnrlogoThe Albufeira Shopping mall was evacuated by the GNR this afternoon. Shoppers were cleared from the zone after an alert had been issued by the centre manager just after 1pm.

The GNR Command in Faro stated, "We received news of a bomb threat and proceeded to evacuate the mall."

Classic vehicles on tour of Silves

1st Tour of Classic Vehicles in the Silves municipality has been organised by the Classical Vehicles Club for the Barlavento which expects around the owners of around 100 old cars to take part.
