Lisbon halts AL licences in five districts due to tourist overload

alLisbon Council is not granting any new Alojamento Local licences in five districts of the capital as part of an attempt to stop these areas becoming ‘tourist only’ zones.

According to a Council report, Urban Tourism Study in Lisbon,’ the districts of Alfama, Mouraria e Castelo have been affected with Bairro Alto and Madragoa soon to follow.

baby2012The eastern Algarve municipality of Alcoutim started its baby-friendly policy in 2014, hoping to encourage mums to move to the area and for family-minded locals not to leave.

The support payment scheme started slowly, with only five births qualifying for support in the first year, but the Council says that now it’s four years into the open-ended programme, this is the measure that now contributes the most to the increasing birth rate in the county.

Ryanair and SAS announce new summertime routes

osloThree new air links to the Algarve have been announced by Scandinavian Airlines, Faro will be connected to Aarhus in Denmark, Gothenburg in Sweden and Oslo, the Norwegian capital, (pictured).

The routes to Denmark and Sweden will be available from April to October 2019, with a weekly frequency on Saturday. The Oslo connection will be launched on June 28, and is scheduled to run until August 9, twice a week on Mondays and Fridays.

Bank of Portugal's credit recommendations ignored by banking sector

Aljezur - Air Force helicopter whisks man from rock in dramatic sea rescue

The Portuguese Air Force helicopter was called up as a sea rescue was too dangerous with swelling seas and a rising tide and land approach also was deemed too dangerous.

Rare bird spotted during Sagres Birdwatching Festival

eagleImperialEuropeanThe 9th Sagres Bird Festival was deemed a success with around 1,160 visitors, including from as far away as São Tomé and Príncipe, Surinam, India, New Zealand, Vietnam, Senegal, Colombia and Canada as well as 35 other countries.

The four-day festival took place at various points around Sagres, including Cabo de São Vicente, the fort at Beliche, the Sagres Fortress, Cabranosa and Monte das Esparregueiras.

Artists criticise the state of the arts in Portugal

miroA letter signed by more than 200 of Portugal’s prominent artists has been presented to Prime Minister, António Costa, alerting him to the "worrying situation of contemporary art," in galleries, collections and institutions.

Headed, ‘The State of Art in Portugal,’ the artists request "a State fund for acquisitions, the creation of a separate agency for contemporary art under the Directorate General for the Arts and urgent fiscal changes."
