Students to be disciplined over Faro Beach alcohol prank

farobridgeThe University of the Algarve is to take disciplinary action against two students over a prank last year that left one girl in hospital.

The case dates back to September 2015, when a 19-year-old first year student had to be rushed to Faro hospital suffering from a surfeit of alcohol, administered as she lay buried up to her head in the sand on Faro Beach.

Portuguese train crashes with four killed

The train was en route from Vigo in Galicia to Porto. The incident occurred in the northwest town of O Porriño in Galicia around 9.30 Friday morning.

Silves fire 'probably arson' - Monchique fire nears Portimão

fireA violent fire that suddenly broke out yesterday evening in the hills to the north of Silves has been controlled and extinguished by an already overstretched fire service.

The blaze that seemed to come from nowhere tore down the slopes to the north of Silves towards the town, starting at around 21:00 on Thursday evening. There already are suggestions from the authorities that the cause may be arson.

Monchique fire rages towards autodrome - sparks fall in Portimão - smoke blocks out the sun

fireNASAsmallAt 5pm this afternoon (Thursday, 8th September)  the number of firefighters battling the flames that started in Monchique last night and which now have spread into the Portimão district, reached 499 with full air and ground support in a massive operation.

By late afternoon the flames had reached the banks of the Arade river and were closing in on the Algarve International Autodrome where black-out conditions from the smoke made necessary the evacuation of the new hotel.

Tuesday the 6th had an average air temperature of 29.2°Celsius, said the IPMA, with the average of maximum temperature (38.6°C - 101.5°F) and minimum (19.8°C) also being the 'highest low' this year to date.

Monchique fire nears the Arade river

fireforestA fire re-ignited on Wednesday evening, September 7th, sweeping across the hills of Monchique in the Nave/Casais area, fanned by a brisk and unwelcome wind.

The blaze was being dealt with by firefighters but this seriously large and worrying development got out of control overnight with flames reaching the Arade river. Many firefighters had remained on fire watch for just this eventuality and 350 bombeiros and 116 vehicles have been involved in what seems like a losing battle.
