French working hours lowest in EU

frenchpassportThe cushiest work schedules have been chalked up to the French who are reported to work the fewest hours of any country in Europe.

Full-time salaried workers in France put in 1,646 hours in 2015, according to the latest study by Eurostat and Coe-Rexecode.

The demographics are as simple as they are concerning with the steadily increasing pressure from a seemingly unstoppable pincer movement of more retirees living longer lives while the youth of the nation has decided to move elsewhere to raise families.

Tesco pledges to donate excess food as waste level rises

tescoSupermarket giant Tesco has revealed the amount of food it has destroyed and has promised to redistribute edible food in future.

Tesco said that the food waste generated by the supermarket increased to nearly 60,000 tonnes last year. This was a 4% increase over 2015.

Cameron in Gibraltar as news of MP’s murder announced

16 June 2016

gibraltarPrime Minister David Cameron cancelled his visit to Gibraltar on Thursday after the killing of British Labour MP Jo Cox.

Ms Cox, who became MP in 2015 for Batley and Spen, was shot to death in the early afternoon outside her constituency office in Birstall. A man has been arrested. Police have said they are investigating the murder and are not yet able to release any information.

British toddler drowns in pool at Carvoeiro villa

carvoeirobeachA British toddler has drowned in a pool at a privately rented villa in the Carvoeiro area. He was two and a half years old.

The Judicial Police are investigating the possibility of negligence on the part of the boy's family.

Portuguese tax on imported secondhand vehicles is illegal

renaultIn a death blow to the long running and illegal Portuguse practice of stiffing people who import secondhand cars, the European Union's Court of Justice finally has decided that Portugal’s taxation policy is breaking EU rules.

The Tax Authority’s insistence that a vehicle ceased to depreciate after five years has ensures those planning to import a vehicle are deterred due to the cost of the tax which often is more than the vehicle is worth.

Tolls and EN125 protests as Prime Minister fails to carry out promises

accident125The Users Committee of the Via do Infante, CUVI, is stepping up its protest action against tolls in the Algarve while roundly condemning parts of the current EN 125 roadworks.
 
The number of accidents in the Algarve since the beginning of the year is 3,608, most of them on the EN125, with 9 deaths and 56 serious injuries.

Faro council estate fire treated as arson

fireThe police are treating an early morning fire at a council housing apartment block in Faro as highly suspicious as a witness heard three explosions just before the blaze took hold.

At least six residents ended up in hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, one of them just four-years-old.
