Brussels to scrutinise UK finances

Britain was cautioned and will stay under scrutiny from Brussels for the coming two years during which time it is expected to get its fiscal targets on track.

The Friday deadline has media pondering the names brave enough to go the course and Barraqueiro Transportes SA, owner of Frota Azul coaches and other transport businesses in Portugal, is a late entrant with maybe too little time to have gone through the figures in sufficient detail.  

German investors go for gold

goldEuropeans are getting jittery about the threat of a Greek exit from the single currency, and the fear has driven Germans to invest in gold bars and coins.

World Gold Council data shows that Germans increased purchases of gold coins and bars of bullion by 20% to 32.2 tonnes in the first three months of 2015, the fastest rate in a year.

Faro airport workers were sacked 'to prevent them going on strike'

ryanairThe Faro airport workers who were sacked unceremoniously from their jobs operating air bridges, are taking their former employer to court.

The 12 workers say they were informed of their dismissal on April 20th by Portway and had to leave on the same day, an attitude by management that they claim is "atrocious" and which they consider illegal.

Space gets tighter onboard easyJet

easyjetEasyJet is determined to give its passengers a tighter squeeze by jamming six more seats into its aircraft.

Currently the Airbus A320s which easyJet has provides space for 180 passengers.

Pires de Lima cornered over TAP layoffs

piresdelimaPortugal's Minister for the Economy Pires de Lima said he has not discussed layoffs at TAP, after the politically disastrous and expensive ten day strike by pilots, but awaits with interest the downsizing plan to be presented by the president of the airline, Fernando Pinto.

Pires de Lima was questioned by journalists at the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the International Chamber of Commerce over how downsizing could be achieved with zero job losses.

Uber website continues due to legal gaffe

taxifaroThe Uber web-based service that matches cars and drivers with customers in Lisbon and Oporto will continue to function until a further court decision into its legality.

Uber Inc was banned from operating in Portugal after a Lisbon Court accepted an injunction filed by Antral (the taxi drivers association) but Uber Portugal did not remove its website or service as management said they had not officially been informed by the court of the suspension.

Portugal’s economic growth continues

shipyardThe eurozone recovery was given a boost as both Italy and France returned to growth.

In the first three months of 2015, the euro region grew by 0.4%, and while slim, this was a faster pace than that experienced in either the US (0.1%) or the UK (0.3%). It was also the most rapid rate in nearly two years.
