In the Algarve, May is a month of quiet transformation. It sits gently between spring and summer, when the landscape is in full bloom and local traditions take center stage before the arrival of the high season. It is a time shaped by nature, community, and small rituals that reflect the region’s deep cultural roots.
Life during May follows a slower, more intentional rhythm. Mornings are spent at local markets, afternoons stretch into long outdoor lunches, and evenings invite walks through village streets where everyday life unfolds naturally. It is in these moments that traditions are not performed, but simply lived.
One of the most symbolic customs is the placing of maias, yellow flowers traditionally displayed at doorways on the night of April 30th. This practice, believed to bring protection and good fortune, connects generations through a shared gesture rooted in folklore. Even today, it remains a subtle yet meaningful sign of cultural continuity across the region.
The first of May, Dia do Trabalhador (Labour Day), is widely celebrated across Portugal. In the Algarve, it is less about formal events and more about gathering. Families and friends come together for picnics, known as piqueniques, enjoying the outdoors and each other’ s company.
These gatherings reflect a deeply ingrained value in Portuguese culture: the importance of convívio, or social connection.Even the Portuguese language reflects this seasonal atmosphere. Expressions and vocabulary are closely tied to nature, daily habits, and shared experiences. T o speak about May in the Algarve is to speak about rhythm, simplicity, and presence.
Through these traditions, May becomes more than just a transition between seasons. It becomes a way of understanding how culture is lived in the Algarve, not through grand gestures, but through quiet continuity, connection, and everyday meaning.

Olá, my name is Anita! I was born and raised on the beautiful Alentejo coast of Portugal, but I’ve been living in the Algarve for over 26 years, a region that continues to inspire my love for language, culture, and connection.
I am a university-qualified teacher and have been teaching Portuguese since 2005, transitioning to online teaching in 2020 to reach students worldwide. This led to the founding of Portuguese With Anita, one of the largest communities of Portuguese learners, with over 200,000 followers on its platforms. What began as an unexpected opportunity, teaching small groups of expats and Portugal-lovers, quickly became a true passion.
Over the years, I’ ve had the privilege of serving as Pedagogical Director of an international school in the Algarve, where I designed complete Portuguese language programs for both children and adults. This experience shaped my teaching approach and motivated me to bring all my knowledge into an accessible online format.
To date, I’ve helped over 6,000 students from many different countries learn Portuguese.
