Summer in the Algarve is a bit different than the rest of the year. The streets become more alive, cafés stay full until late noon, local markets become busier, and small coastal towns have a new rhythm with new visitors.
For many people, no matter if they are visiting or living in Portugal, summer is also the time when they start hearing Portuguese everywhere around them. Sometimes they hear it at the beach, while ordering Bola de Berlim, walking through a festival or just when asking locals for recommendations about the beautiful hidden places our country has.
Learning a few seasonal expressions can make everyday interactions feel more natural and enjoyable. More than vocabulary, these phrases help you understand the lifestyle of summer in Portugal.
Here are some common summer phrases that might be useful in the Algarve:
- “Vamos à praia?”, meaning “shall we go to the beach?” This one is probably one of the most common summer invitations in Portugal.
- “Está imenso calor”, meaning “it’s extremely hot”. Portuguese people use “imenso” very naturally, to emphasize things.
- “Conheces alguma praia escondida?”, meaning “do you know any hidden beach?” A very useful phrase when exploring smaller coastal areas and local spots.
- “Vamos ao mercado de verão”, meaning: “Let’s go to the summer market”. During the summer, many towns in the Algarve organize outdoor markets, especially at night.
- “Há festa na vila hoje”, meaning “there’s a festival in town today”. Small towns across the Algarve often have traditional summer festivals with music and local food.
- “Queria um gelado, por favor”, meaning “I would like an ice cream, please”. Simple and useful, something you will probably say many times during the summer.
- “Vamos dar um mergulho”, meaning “let’s go for a swim”. A very common expression during beach days.
- “O pôr do sol aqui é lindo”, meaning “the sunset here is beautiful”. Something many people end up saying while visiting the Algarve coast.
Learning Portuguese is about living with the language in every moment. Understanding a simple phrase at a local café or during a summer festival can make you feel more connected to the place around you, and the Algarve is one of the best places to feel like that

I am a university-qualified teacher and have been teaching Portuguese since 2005, transitioning to online teaching in 2020 to reach students worldwide. This led to the founding of Portuguese With Anita, one of the largest communities of Portuguese learners, with over 200,000 followers on its platforms. What began as an unexpected opportunity, teaching small groups of expats and Portugal-lovers, quickly became a true passion.
Over the years, I’ ve had the privilege of serving as Pedagogical Director of an international school in the Algarve, where I designed complete Portuguese language programs for both children and adults. This experience shaped my teaching approach and motivated me to bring all my knowledge into an accessible online format.
