During summer, in the Algarve of course you have beautiful beaches and sunny days, but what makes this region memorable is how different each place feels.
You can find areas that invite you to slow down and stay for hours. Others that surprise you with dramatic landscapes and the feeling that life moves at a softer pace.
If you are spending summer in the Algarve, here are some places that can help you experience the beauty of the region and a little more of Portuguese culture and lifestyle!
Benagil Cave
One of the most iconic places in the Algarve, Benagil Cave is known for its impressive rock formations and the natural opening at the top that lets the sunlight in. Many people visit by boat, kayak, or paddleboard. Going early in the morning usually means calmer waters and a quieter experience.
Useful Portuguese word: gruta → cave
Ponta da Piedade
Located near Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is one of those places that doesn’t look real. Golden cliffs, small beaches, clear water, all which create one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Portugal. You can enjoy it from the viewpoints or explore the area by boat.
Useful Portuguese expression: Que vista linda! → What a beautiful view!
Praia da Marinha
Often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, Praia da Marinha is known for its clear water and impressive rock formations. There you can just spend hours swimming, reading, or simply enjoying summer at a slower rhythm.
Useful Portuguese expression: dar um mergulho → go for a swim
Silves
If you want a break from the coast, Silves offers a completely different atmosphere. With its castle and historical atmosphere, it feels quieter and deeply connected to the region’s history. Highly recommended taking a walk through Silves’ streets during summer evenings!
Useful Portuguese word: castelo → castle
Tavira
Tavira has a calm and elegant feeling that many people fall in love with. The town combines river views with traditional architecture and has easy access to beautiful beaches. It’s perfect if you are planning to wander without a plan.
Useful Portuguese expression: Vamos passear → Let’s go for a walk
Monchique
For a different side of the Algarve, Monchique brings mountains, fresh air and green landscapes. Summer temperatures here tend to feel softer, making it a lovely option for those looking to escape the heat and discover another rhythm of life.
Useful Portuguese word: serra → mountain range
Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente
At the southwestern edge of Portugal, Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente offer dramatic cliffs with open views of the Atlantic. There is something peaceful and powerful about standing there and looking at the ocean.
Useful Portuguese expression: Vale a pena → It’s worth it
There isn’t only one way to experience summer in the Algarve. Some days call for beaches, others for small towns and hidden corners, and some days are simply to sit somewhere beautiful and listen to Portuguese around you. Learning a new language starts exactly there: by exploring a place and becoming curious about the words people use to describe it.
About Anita
Olá, my name is Anita! I was born and raised on the beautiful Alentejo coast of Portugal, but I’ve been living in the Algarve for over 26 years, a region that continues to inspire my love for language, culture, and connection.
I am a university-qualified teacher and have been teaching Portuguese since 2005, transitioning to online teaching in 2020 to reach students worldwide. This led to the founding of Portuguese With Anita, one of the largest communities of Portuguese learners, with over 200,000 followers on its platforms. What began as an unexpected opportunity, teaching small groups of expats and Portugal-lovers, quickly became a true passion.
Over the years, I’ ve had the privilege of serving as Pedagogical Director of an international school in the Algarve, where I designed complete Portuguese language programs for both children and adults. This experience shaped my teaching approach and motivated me to bring all my knowledge into an accessible online format.
To date, I’ve helped over 6,000 students from many different countries learn Portuguese.
Whether my students want to move to Portugal, communicate with loved ones, reconnect with their roots, or simply learn a language they love, my goal is always the same: to help them feel confident, supported, and truly connected to the Portuguese language and culture.
Let’ s learn Portuguese together! Vamos!
