We've been so lucky to get some really big support, everyone has been so kind, sadly we had to make a few changes and loose some facilities so we could get a habitation license so the land could actually be sold.
Lagoa Camara have been brilliant, advising and working quickly for us as we always felt nervous we wouldnt be able to pull it off in time, so now the land is in the name of the association, so it belongs to the animals!

The Refugio dos Burros, or Donkey Sanctuary, is the small yet vital animal refuge in Estombar, near Lagoa in the Algarve.
The refuge was started over 20 years ago and is home to donkeys, horses, dogs, cats, sheep, pigs and poultry, all unwanted or abandoned, many un-homeable.
We are now faced with a dilemma as the owner of the land that the refuge occupies is in ill health and having put his life savings into the property now needs to sell to be able to retire. We have set a target to raise €150.000 to be able to buy the land and secure the refuge’s future.
Already each week we have to earn €2,000 to keep the refuge running and cover all the feeding and vet’s costs, relying totally on donations from well-wishers and the funds raised in our charity shops. We don’t have any savings or ‘rainy day’ money so we need to find money to buy the land on top of our weekly needs.
We have been asking supporters if they could help with donations - no matter how small - and so far we have raised €1,732 in just one month, a long way from the goal but it’s a great start.
