Today, 16 June 2026, the Rotary Club of Albufeira celebrates its 55th anniversary, marking more than five decades of service, fellowship and commitment to the values of friendship, solidarity, integrity and peace.
Founded on 16 June 1971, the Club has developed numerous initiatives in the fields of education, youth, health, social support, culture and community development, guided by Rotary’s principle of “Service Above Self”.
One of the Club’s most significant areas of activity has been educational support through university scholarships. This year alone, eight students benefited from scholarships awarded through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Albufeira, the Portuguese Rotary Foundation, the Municipality of Albufeira and other supporting organisations.
Over the years, the Club has also carried out solidarity campaigns and supported families and institutions through the donation of food and essential goods, particularly during periods of greater social need.
A flagship project of the Club is its long-standing partnership with APEXA, an organisation dedicated to supporting people with disabilities and special needs. The Rotary Club of Albufeira has continuously promoted and supported this initiative, presenting its impact to visiting District Governors and other organisations.
Youth development remains a central priority. In this context, the Club successfully organised two editions of the Algarve RYLA – Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, bringing together young people from different backgrounds to develop leadership, citizenship and personal growth skills.
Throughout its history, the Club has organised numerous lectures, conferences and public discussions featuring distinguished national and international speakers. Among many notable guests was Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, years before becoming President of the Portuguese Republic.
The Club has also honoured outstanding professionals and community leaders through its “Professional of the Year” and “Career Recognition” initiatives.
The Club’s headquarters, inaugurated on 10 June 1997, remains a true Rotary House serving the community, hosting meetings, lectures, charitable initiatives and gatherings of Rotary leaders from across the region and District. The Friendship Tree planted on that occasion continues to symbolise Rotary values of friendship, service and cooperation.
The Rotary Club of Albufeira maintains an active presence in regional, district and international Rotary activities, including conferences, anniversaries, handover ceremonies, joint projects and humanitarian initiatives.
Rotary’s international dimension has enabled the Club to build bridges between cultures, countries and communities, benefiting from the presence of members and friends from different nationalities who have chosen Albufeira and the Algarve as a place to live or maintain close ties.
The Club continues to work closely with the Municipality of Albufeira, local councils, schools, associations, businesses and community organisations, promoting partnerships that contribute to sustainable solutions for social and community challenges.
Looking ahead, the Rotary Club of Albufeira remains committed to membership growth, youth engagement, educational initiatives, cultural projects and the promotion of peace.
The official 55th Anniversary Celebration will take place on 11 July 2026 at the Club’s headquarters and will include the Handover Ceremony, the 2nd Solidarity Paella Event and the induction of new members.
On this symbolic occasion, the Rotary Club of Albufeira expresses its sincere gratitude to all members, past presidents, honorary members, institutional partners, public and private entities, associations, sponsors, media organizations and friends who, over the past 55 years, have contributed to the growth and development of the club.
A special word of appreciation is extended to the Municipality of Albufeira, the Parish Councils, local social institutions and all those who have believed in the value of Rotary service as a tool for human development, solidarity and active citizenship.
The 55th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Albufeira is, above all, a collective achievement and a testament to the fact that when people and institutions unite around common causes, it is possible to create a positive and lasting impact within the community.
As it celebrates this important milestone, the Rotary Club of Albufeira renews its commitment to serving the community, strengthening friendship and creating a lasting positive impact.
