Exhibition by 'political artist' opens at República 14, in Olhão

An exhibition of what is described as 'political art' by artist FYR is now open at República 14 in Olhão, until March 29th, 2026.

FYR is a self-taught, London-Irish artist now based between Spain and Portugal. Coming from a working-class background, the artist’s practice developed outside traditional academic routes, shaped instead by early exposure to museums, street art, graffiti, and visual culture in London. After returning to creative work in recent years, FYR has focused primarily on digital art and limited-edition prints, a medium chosen both for its accessibility and its ability to support a bold, graphic visual language.

The work on display blends pop art, street art, and political cartooning. Visually striking and deliberately engaging, FYR’s pieces often use familiar cultural symbols to address broader social and political themes, including economic inequality, power structures, and consumer culture. While playful in tone, the work encourages critical reflection and conversation, aiming to make complex or uncomfortable topics approachable to a wide audience.

A key element of FYR’s practice is accessibility. By producing affordable, limited-edition prints, the artist challenges the perception of contemporary art as an exclusive or elite space. This approach reflects a belief that art should be available to everyone, not only as viewers but also as collectors.

Republica 14’s current exhibition aligns closely with this ethos. By prioritising community, diversity, and inclusivity, the space offers a platform for artists whose voices may sit outside traditional gallery circuits, while reinforcing the value of physical exhibition spaces in an increasingly digital culture.
