UPDATE - Unconscious German tourist rescued off Armona Island

armonaAirielA German tourist swimming off Fuseta-Mar beach, on the more dangerous ‘ocean side’ of Armona Island, was pulled from the water by lifeguards.

The 54-year-old’s wife realised he was in trouble and raised the alarm.

"Lifeguards from the nearest official tourist beach and a lifeboat from Olhão, with a medical team on board, were sent in to action activated as the swimmer had been swept away from the shore by a riptide.

The German was pulled ashore, unconscious.

"Resuscitation techniques and basic life support actions were carried out by the three lifeguards on the beach, supported by a nurse.”

Having managed to resuscitate the man, he then was treated by the medical emergency team. The German was taken by lifeboat to the quayside in Olhão and onward to Faro Hospital by ambulance.

UPDATE: Death was declared on Wednesday as the German tourist had been immersed in the sea for too long to survive.
