Quarteira is to have its own lifeboat station, operational by the summer of 2020, according to Nuno Cortes Lopes, the Commander of the south coast.
In addition, a new Maritime Police station will be installed in the former 'Instituto Portuário e dos Transportes Marítimos' (IPTM) building.
The space has been provided by Docapesca and the construction is the responsibility of the Maritime Authority but the work will cost Loulé ratepayers €725,000.
The gap between Olhão and Portimão left the rescue services exposed along much of the central Algarve coast but a new lifeboat station in Quarteira will fill this gap and will cover Vilamoura and Albufeira marina areas.
According to Comander Lopes, the biggest part of Loulé Council’s money will be spent on accommodation for members of the lifeboat service.
Docapesca has handed over an old house in the centre of the city which will be converted into five apartments for rescue service staff.
