27 children at Faro Hospital with signs of food poisoning

Dr Photo - 27 children at Faro Hospital with signs of food poisoningA total of 27 children were transported to the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve, in Faro yesterday, "with symptoms of food poisoning", but without the need for hospitalisation.

“27 children with symptoms compatible with food poisoning were admitted to the emergency department, all stable and, so far, without the need for hospitalisation”, explained a source at the Hospital de Faro.

The Faro District Relief Operations Command (CDOS) reported that the incident occurred at Dr. João Lúcio Basic School of 2nd and 3rd cycles, in Fuseta, Olhão municipality.

Contacted by the Lusa news agency, the Mayor of Olhão, António Pina, said he was “trying to find out details”, indicating that, possibly, this would be a situation of food poisoning.

The Mayor added that the provision of meals to the school in question is made by the Portuguese Red Cross. "It is contracted with them", he added.

Lusa tried unsuccessfully to contact the Faro-Loulé delegation of the Red Cross.

The Faro CDOS also reported that two Red Cross ambulances were on site, three from the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM) and one ambulance from the Faro-Cruz Lusa Humanitarian Firefighters Association.
