The mayor of Albufeira is very pleased to to host an event that is an unprecedented challenge. “This is the first time that the competition takes place in our country and it is an honour for the organisation to have chosen Albufeira to stage an initiative that has aroused enormous media attention at the international level”, says José Carlos Rolo.

He regrets that, due to the pandemic situation, "the event cannot have spectators, but he hopes that the public that follow the event online may return in the future in normal conditions".

The Mayor took the opportunity to highlight “the solidarity component of the event, since the value of entries will be donated in its entirety to an institution of a social nature in the municipality”.

The Vertical Race is a new sport that consists of climbing a certain number of steps in the shortest time possible. Held in some of the most famous skyscrapers in the world, namely the Empire State Building, in New York, or the Taipei building, in China, the event has raised the interest of the public and international media.

This time it was up to Albufeira to host the initiative, in a co-organisation between the company Free Challenge and the Municipality of Albufeira, which has the support of Clube Desportivo Areias de São João, Algarve Athletics Association and Eurologistix – Audiovisuais & Eventos and Take5-Audiovisual Productions.

On Saturday, June 26th, around 100 athletes will compete in the first competition of this kind in a 5-star hotel in Albufeira, climbing 12 floors running or walking, 30 metres high at the Hotel Jupiter. The race will be divided into individual time trial events, in the male and female categories. Each athlete goes up the stairs once, and the top 10 will compete in the last stage, which will place the winners of the “Corrida Vertical Albufeira Jupiter Hotel” on the podium.

Registration, which ends this Thursday 24th June, costs 10 euros which includes a kit containing a t-shirt, two masks, discount vouchers and dinner at the Hotel Jupiter de Albufeira.

Due to the pandemic situation, the presence of spectators is not allowed, but it will be possible to follow the event live on the Albufeira Municipality's social networks, namely on the YouTube channel and on the Facebook page – albufeira.pt.
