18 day teachers' strike starts today

18 DAY TEACHERS' STRIKE STARTS TODAYA teachers’ strike that will last for 18 days starts today and will take place district by district, starting in Lisbon, where a rally is scheduled for Praça do Rossio.

The strike was called by a platform of eight  teaching union organizations: Fenprof, ASPL, Pró-Ordem, SEPLEU, SINAPE, SINDEP, SIPE and SPLIU.

After the first day in Lisbon, the strike continues in Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Portalegre, Santarém, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Viseu, ending in Porto on the 8th of February.

Similar to what will happen in Lisbon today, concentrations are planned in the district capitals for the day they are on strike.

The eight unions, who had initially considered that it was not the “suitable moment” for a strike, given that the negotiation process with the Ministry of Education on the competition regime was underway, decided to call the strike after having given the guardianship a deadline to retreat from some of the proposals presented in previous negotiations and open new negotiation processes on other matters.

The deadline ended on January 10th, and the day before, the Ministry of Education had convened the third round of negotiations for the 18th and 20th, in which a proposal for a negotiating calendar on other topics would also be discussed.

However, Fenprof's general secretary explained that the agenda's strike actions would remain as planned, because "calling a meeting, by itself, does not change anything".

On Friday, at the end of the 'camp' that he occupied, for four days, in front of the Ministry of Education, Mário Nogueira also said that from the 20th of January everything is open.

“I would say that it is a key day”, he said, adding that the Ministry has to meet the demands of teachers because “meetings without solutions do not give an answer to problems”.

"We want the meeting on the 20th to be remarkable and if there are not the answers we want, we will continue until the 11th of February", he added, recalling that on that day there is a demonstration in Lisbon.

At that time, teachers will evaluate new protest actions that preferably bring together the various trade union organizations.

The strike by districts takes place at the same time as two other strikes are taking place: an indefinite strike, called by STOP, which began on December 9th and will continue, until at least the end of the month, and a partial strike at the first half of classes called by SIPE, is expected to last until February.

Teachers challenge some of the proposals presented by the Ministry of Education such as negotiating the revision of the placement and recruitment regime for teaching staff, but they also require solutions to older problems related to the teaching career, working conditions and wages.
