Portugal feels the chill with temperatures hitting -5°C

PORTUGAL FEELS THE CHILL WITH TEMPERATURES HITTING -5°CTemperatures in Portugal will “drop significantly between Tuesday and Thursday, with minimum temperatures as low as -5ºC in the interior North and Center of the country, and 5ºC in the Algarve region.

The Fien depression is responsible for worsening weather conditions in the coming days, with the IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) forecasting cold, rain and rough seas.

“The weather in mainland Portugal will be influenced by the joint action of an anticyclone located in the Azores region and the Fien depression, inducing a strong northwesterly current over the continent with the transport of a maritime polar air mass”, describes the IPMA, in a statement published on its website.

According to the IPMA, rain showers and high winds are forecast for today, Jan 17th, plus snowfall is expected on land above 800/1,100 meters in altitude in the North and Center of the country, and the intensification of the wind with gusts that in some regions could reach 120 kilometres per hour.

The districts of Faro, Setúbal and Beja are under yellow warning due to strong sea waves until 18:00 today, after which the orange warning will be issued until 00:00 on Thursday 19th January.
