The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) has shut down two restaurants and a nightclub in the Algarve, due to lack of “technical, functional and hygiene requirements”.
The operation, which took place in several locations in the western Algarve, found hygiene requirements were not being adhered to, and the seizure of an illegal weapon was found inside the nightclub, resulting in the arrest of five people.
In a statement, ASAE said that "under an inspection operation aimed at combating illicit acts against public health, three proceedings of an administrative nature were instituted against the owners of establishments."
Following the order of closure, ASAE seized five animal carcasses, various food products, nine bottles of spirits, 10 gaming machines, cash and an automatic measuring instrument, all with an estimated value of 168,000 euros.
After being subjected to health and hygiene tests the foodstuffs were classified as "abnormally damaged" with a lack of requirements and sent for destruction.
The ASAE had the collaboration of the Republican National Guard.
