Corticeira Amorim, owners of the cork factory just outside Silves, have announced today that they will transfer the expanded cork production unit from the Silves location to a factory in Venda Novas, Évora, to ensure a "greater competitiveness" of the business.
This will be reassuring to locals and The Neighbours of the Factory, who have been campaigning against the smoke pollution and noise made by the factory for years, and were recently promised that the smoke pollution will stop by 1st July 2025. "After an evaluation of the existing productive capacities in several industrial units of Amorim Cork Solutions, it was decided to transfer, from June 9th, the Silves industrial unit to the Venda Novas industrial unit (which also produces insulation products)," reads a statement released today to the Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
According to the statement, "the decision was based solely on operational efficiency, considering exclusively market issues, installed capacity versus market size and the location of the assembly".
The goal is to allow "a greater competitiveness" of the expanded cork business, benefiting from the "greater proximity of the raw materials used and the concentration of the investments necessary to obtain greater productivity".
The Lusa news agency asked Corticeira Amorim for additional clarifications about this reorganisation, but are still waiting for a response.
