The GNR apprehended two officers in Tavira following evidence of illegal conduct, including abuse of authority and excessive use of force.
The Faro Territorial Command of the National Republican Guard (GNR) arrested two of its own officers, aged 23 and 25, in Tavira on May 21. The arrests follow an internal investigation uncovering serious misconduct.
The GNR stated the investigation revealed “approaches to minorities with the intent of extortion, abuse of authority, and excessive force”. Evidence led to their arrest, and they will face initial questioning at the Faro Judicial Court.
The GNR emphasized its commitment to police ethics and transparency, vowing to act firmly against any violations, even within its ranks. The investigation is ongoing under the Public Prosecutor's Office.
