The Municipality recently approved a significant investment in its Fire Department, amounting to 5.4 million euros. This is part of the Portugal 2030 Programme, which aims to support the acquisition of material resources for civil protection and disaster prevention and management.
In a statement, the Municipality announced that it has submitted an application for the construction of the operational building for the Olhão Municipal Fire Department (barracks), valued at €4,490,097.70, with installation planned on land strategically located for optimal access to the city's road network and efficient emergency response within the municipality.
An additional application was submitted for the acquisition of four operational vehicles for fighting rural fires, totaling 915 thousand euros (which includes 1 forest fire-fighting vehicle, 1 tactical forest tank vehicle, and 2 light fire-fighting vehicles).
According to the local authority, these applications have received favorable opinions from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority.
The Municipality also stated that the recruitment of 10 firefighters is underway, with a new recruitment process planned for another 10 in July, and the reinforcement of the Municipal Civil Protection area, with the forecasted opening of 12 vacancies (for GTF and civil protection technicians, technical assistants, telecommunications operators, special vehicle drivers, and mechanics).
António Miguel Pina, Mayor of Olhão, mentioned that this investment addresses a long-recognized need for the Olhão firefighters.
