The Union of Parishes of Lagoa and Carvoeiro have purchased a U Safe device for Carvoeiro beach, a self-propelled, remotely controlled maritime rescue system to aid people at risk of drowning in the sea.
"This innovative device will be used not only during the bathing season, but year-round, as part of a protocol to be signed with the beach's concessionaire," the municipality explained in a statement.
The U SAFE is a self-propelled, remotely controlled maritime rescue system, designed to be a "fast and precise aquatic robot," capable of quickly reaching people in distress at sea. With a U-shaped hull and two lateral turbines, the device maintains its functionality regardless of its position in the water, thanks to a sophisticated guidance and navigation system.
The device allows anyone, even without prior training, to perform a rescue with great precision. Its greatest advantage lies precisely in its ability to operate in adverse conditions, such as rough seas or rocky areas, avoiding putting the rescuer or a support vessel at risk.
The concessionaire at Vale de Centianes beach, as well as a maritime tourism operator in Benagil, already have this equipment.
After the equipment was installed, a rescue simulation was carried out at Praia do Carvoeiro, recorded on video, where the equipment demonstrated its effectiveness and speed of response in a realistic scenario.
