A man died in a collision between a car and a heavy goods vehicle on the IC1 highway in São Bartolomeu de Messines, yesterday afternoon.
The alert was raised at 14:04hrs, with traffic was restricted on that part of the road until 18:30hrs.
According to information provided by the Algarve Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, the fatal victim was the driver of the car. His death was declared by the doctor of the Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle (VMER).
The driver of the heavy goods vehicle, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to Portimão Hospital.
Soon after the collision, the man's car caught fire and quickly spread to bushes next to the road, needing to be extinguished by firefighters on the ground and and by air.
Nine vehicles and twenty personnel were on site, from the Messines Fire Department, INEM and GNR.
