More EU nationals find work in Britain

ukhighstreetThe number of people from EU countries who are working in the UK has tipped over the 2 million mark for the first time.

The figures, from the Office for National Statistics show that nearly half are from Eastern Europe.

At the same time, the ONS data revealed that there were fewer workers who had been born in the UK. In the three months to June, British-born workers dropped by 167,000.

Migrants from Eastern Europe now number 973,000, up from 77,000 ten years ago. They include people from Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Slovakia and Slovenia.

Romanians and Bulgarians were counted separately, with 189,000 now working in the UK. This number is below the fears voiced when restrictions were lifted in January last year.

Taking both workers born in the EU and outside the EU, there are nearly 5 million in Britain accounted for by increases in the number of people entering the country from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

There has been a drop in the number of workers who were born in Africa, South Africa, the US, Australia and New Zealand.
