Bank of Portugal Governor under pressure on Day 1 of BES enquiry

bop3The Bank of Portugal has now defined ‘soon’ as its governor announced today that Novo Banco, the new name for the OK parts of bust lender Banco Espirito Santo, will be sold off in the ‘mid to second half of 2015.’

Carlos Costa assured that the sale of Novo Banco will be made in a "transparent and open way." This will be a pleasing change from the opaque and covert manner in which BES was run by Ricardo Salgado.

Business travellers spend record amount in the UK

londonPeople travelling to the UK on business spent more than £5bn last year, an increase of 11% in 2012.

At the same time, British businesspeople spent £4.7bn in 2013, a drop of 3%, although the amount of money spent in China and India went up.

Portugal steps out of deflation

For Portugal the rate was 0.1% in October. That coupled with 0.0% inflation in September has put Portugal just out of deflation.

Spanish navy rams Greenpeace oil protest

REPSOLA Greenpeace vessel was reported to have been rammed by one from the Spanish navy, leaving one activist injured.

The event came during a protest against oil drilling by Repsol in the Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Oil in Cyprus provokes deeper tensions

Only minutes later Cyprus’s president, Nicos Anastasiades, accused Turkey of “provocative actions” for sending a surveillance vessel and war ships to search for natural resources in the island’s exclusive economic zone.
