‘Banif three’ get five years each for pinching €10 million

These serious offences and the huge amount of money involved resulted in sentences that were suspended if each defendant pays €400,000 back to the bank – within the next five years.

BES Dubai offshoot frozen by local regulator

This freeze is designed to preserve the assets held locally in Dubai amid concerns that illegal transfers may be made to other parts of the failed Espírito Santo empire, or to individuals connected with the financial group.

Another court management system to be launched in 2017

justiceRui Mateus Pereira, the leader of the team that is responsible for the overall management of the new computerised court system, Citius, admitted today that the programme will be overloaded within three years, if it ever gets off the ground in the first place.

According to Pereira, a new software package for the Justice Ministry is already being prepared for launch in 2017.

Gibraltar football row - Faro council 'surprised'

footballFaro council today reacted with great "surprise" at the distinct possibility that Gibraltar will stop playing its matches in the Algarve Stadium.

The Gibraltar Football Association "so far has not expressed any displeasure” about the arrangement with the Algarve Stadium, states the council.

Golf - Portugal Masters to stay in the Algarve

oceanicovilamouragolfThe president of the Algarve Tourism Region welcomed the announcement that the Portugal Masters golf competition will continue to be played at the Oceânico Victoria course in Vilamoura for another three years.

The Masters is the biggest golf tournament held in Portugal, with a prize fund of €2 million and which attracts over 2,000 hours of television coverage around the world.

Vale da Telha hit by tornado

tornadovilamouraPortugal’s weather service, and hundreds of locals, have confirmed that the Vale da Telha area of Aljezur was hit by a tornado in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 16 September.

The tornado hit at 05.20 and damaged a hotel, houses, trees and vehicles.

Ex-minister gets three and a half years suspended sentence

justiceAn unrepentant Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues said she it will appeal her suspended 3 year sentence, "I have a clear conscience and I am very proud of the work I did."

The former Minister of Education received the sentence, annoyingly for many it was a suspended one, for ‘dereliction of duty by a holder of political office.’

Portugal's €1 billion bond issue oversubscribed

eurozonePortugal's 'Agency for the Management of Treasury and Public Debt' (IGCP) this morning managed successfully to place €250 million in three month government bonds and €750 million in one year government bonds with demand in the market for three times the amount placed.

The IGCP also managed to attract low average interest rates illustrating that there is an appetite for Portugal’s bonds and at sensible interest rates.
