Loulé to spend €500,000 on projects voted for by locals

louleLoulé council is to spend €500,000, but only on projects that have been voted in by locals.

All Loulé's citizens can review the various project proposals and choose which ones they want, all as part of the first Participatory Budgeting scheme being run by the municipality.

Fnac to open in Faro

fnacstoreThe French electronic goods and book retailer is adding three more stores to its chain in Portugal with Faro joining Oeiras and Setúbal.

The three new stores will be between 900m2 and 1,600m2 building on the medium size format that gives optimum profitability.

'Unnecessary' investment agreed for Faro docks

ship3“Redevelopment works are not necessary for expansion" at Faro docks, according to comments from José Pedro Soares from the Sines and Algarve Port Authority on August 13.

The very next day the same Port Authority signed an agreement to invest €3.2 million on dredging at Faro docks which it had just claimed was not necessary.

Foreign motorway toll dodgers face court

tollsDrivers of foreign plated vehicles using Portugal's motorway network who have failed to pay for the privilege have been warned to pay the tolls of face a debt collection system that supposedly now stretches across national borders.

Approximately 300,000 drivers resident in Spain have dodged paying for their motorway journeys on visits to Portugal since 2009 and now owe €11 million  - across Europe the total can only be guessed at as the concessionaire companies have not admitted that the current multiple systems for payments has caused mass toll evasion.

Algarve tourism firmly back on track

desideriosilvaAlgarve hotels have registered 6.5 million overnight stays so far this year, a rise of 13% over 2013 according to the Algarve’s tourist board.

Data from the National Statistics Institute covering January to June this year show the Algarve has had an increase of 757,000 overnight stays compared to last year, the majority of which were by foreign tourists which accounted for a grand total of 5.2 million overnight stays.

Germany fights back against benefit cheats

The move is part of a crack down on “benefit tourism” and would end EU migrants’ social welfare benefits after six months without work, after which they must leave the country.

The death happened at the Last Stop shooting range in Arizona where kids as young as eight years can fire weapons if their parents approve.

Ryanair launches new ticket scheme

ryanairRyanair’s plans to attract business travellers have been furthered by the carrier’s launch of ‘Business Plus’ tickets.

The ticket allows passengers to change flights on the same day and even airports as long as it is in the same destination country for no extra fee. Normally, Ryanair demands as much as £90 for such a change.
