Portuguese democracy, "There is the feeling of living in a new dictatorship"

A new study reveals that most of the voting population has a healthy distrust of political parties which translates into higher and higher levels of absenteeism at the polls.

Angolan bank seeks riches in Lisbon

bnialgolaLisbon today welcomed the official opening of a new bank to the capital, the Angolan Bank ‘BNI Europe.’

The International Business Bank (BNI), founded by Mário Palhares (pictured), will provide corporate banking and private banking services in Portugal.

DECO spots €200 telecoms loophole

decoConsumer rights organisation DECO has spotted that the current laws allow Portugal's avaracious telecom companies to charge installation costs if the customer cancels the contract within the statutory 14 days cooling off period.

As the law stands, companies legally can charge up to €200 under the new law regulating distance contracts. 

BES subsidiary fails to repay €897 million to Portugal Telecom

Bento is busy this week ‘establishing priorities, regaining confidence in the bank and combatting speculation,’ a job made rather tougher last night as the bank failed to ensure its key creditor, Portugal Telecom, was paid back the €897 million Rioforte corporate bond that due by midnight last night.

Via do Infante has lost 10,000 vehicles a day

tollsThe Algarve's Via do Infante motorway linking Vila Real de Santo António with Lagos has lost over 10,000 vehicles per day since 2009.

The latest report on Mobility and Transport in Portugal states that the average daily traffic on the road in 2013 stood at 8,156 vehicles - five years earlier the number was 18,000. During the low season the highway is almost deserted and only in the three summer months does the traffic increase significantly.

France insists on “home-made” labels

The label, which will be mandatory, is designed to make it clear which foods have genuinely been prepared by the chef and which are pre-cooked.

Silves council may buy the Fabrica do Inglês site

corkmuseumThe saga continues at the Fabrica do Inglês as, according to a report in today’s Sul Informaçao, Silves council now wants to buy the entire site from Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the bank that ended up owning it.

Rosa Palma, the Silves mayor, is looking to see if the council can afford to secure the site so it can once again be host to the award-winning cork museum.
